According to Brown University Health Services, it should take me about 10 to 15 minutes to fall asleep. But quite honestly, I don't remember the last time that happened. Between reading for 30 minutes and tossing and turning for another 30, I'm in bed for almost an hour before I can actually fall asleep.
For me, prescription sleeping pills are out of the question. I've also gone the homeopathic route and taken melatonin on occasion. But to be perfectly honest, I don't think it does much for me. What I have is a case of the "over-active-mind-before-bed" accompanied with a case of the "I-keep-my-cell-phone-on-my-nightstand-at-night." If you are anything like me, chances are you just need to be able to relax and tune out the noise before bed.
So now I do a 20-minute yoga ritual before bed that helps me relax and fall asleep faster - and deeper. Can't fall asleep? Give it a go.
